What is Kahoot!

Kahoot! is a free game-based learning platform which allows teachers to build and customize multiple choice quizzes, using publicly available images and videos or their own teaching materials.

It is used to monitor each student's progress towards learning objectives, identify strengths and weaknesses, and to identify areas where the students would benefit from more one-to-one teaching.

How does Kahoot! support English teaching

For engaging students: Kahoot! manages to engage students in English learning with an interesting game mode. It motivates students by having them competing against each other and gain the highest point.

For assessing students: Since the result of every question will be shown, teachers can have a better view of how well students master knowledge. Instructors can identify the problems and students with problems on certain knowledge simply by reading the analysis of the result.

How to play Kahoot!

1.During gameplay, the questions and up to 4 multiple choice answers are displayed on the main screen.

2.Every answer corresponds to a distinctive color and shape. On the screen of the learners' devices (any device, desktop or laptop with a web browser), there are at most four rectangles with the colour and the shape on each, and the learner needs to click or tap on the rectangle representing the correct answer.

How to create a Kahoot! game

1. Sign in: Sign in at Kahoot!
What you see after you sign in
2. Name the quiz: Let's Create a new "Kahoot! Quiz". Just simply click on the "Quiz" button, then input a title for this quiz! After that, click "Go" !  (I named it " How much do you know about me".)

3. Ask questions: You will be led into the page when you can input questions relevant to your quiz title, for example, I put in an easy question "How old am I?". You can adjust the size and angle of the words by clicking on the symbol "B" "I" etc.

 4. Type in choices: Drag the page to the bottom. You will see a place where you can upload pictures and input answers. Click on the "Incorrect" button to mark the correct answer! Check out my example on the picture.

 4. Add question: Below the blanks where you input answers, you can see options like "delete questions"," add question","duplicate"etc. Let's not stop it! Add more questions just like what I have told you!

 5. Save and Continue: After you have had enough questions. Click on "Save and continue", you will be taken to the edit page where you can view all you questions and edit them. After your final edition, click on "Save and Continue" again!
6.Describe the quiz: You can tell people more about your quiz. Setting the difficulty of the quiz and set the target group will help us know more about it. If you don't want it to be shown to the public, don't forget to set it to private!
7.Give it a voice: While participants are waiting for others to get into the game, they could enjoy the youtube video that attaches to the game! Just paste the URL of the video in the box when it tells you to!

8. Try out my quiz: Let me know when you wanna play and we can meet! You can Input 813720 at kahoot.it on your phone or other devices at that time and enjoy it with me!

Below is a video which I think will be of help! If you want to know more about Kahoot after watching the video, please feel free to contact me. =)

Limitations on using Kahoot! to teach English

Kahoot! is an extraordinary tool to engage and assess students. However, there are something teachers need to pay attention to when using Kahoot!.

1. More game modes: Discussion, survey, quiz are the three main functions of Kahoot! Among the three main functions, quiz mode is the most commonly used one. However, in this mode, there is only multiple choices, which can be rather limited. Teachers might want to ask students to elaborate the reason for their choices.

2. Protect students with lower ability: One thing worths noticing is that teacher shouldn't show the class who answer the question wrong. As there is a possibility that one or two students don't grasp the knowledge and make mistakes constantly.

Ideas on using Kahoot! in the classroom setting

Taking into consideration the limitations I mentioned above, I suggest teachers of Form 2 students (12-13 years old) in Hong Kong use Kahoot! in this way:

1.Every 2 days, teachers ask 3 students to work together and create a Kahoot! game based on the  English knowledge they have learned that week. Detailed instructions should be given from teachers to students, for example, a teacher asks students to make a question on a specific grammar point.

2.On the other hand, students who are answering the question can be in groups and discuss the answers in English. Every student in the group has to answer at least one question.

  1. Hi Cindy!

I like using Kahoot! as well! The first time I used it was during the start of Term 1 at Warwick in Tilly's class! When she told us to take out our smart phones to play the game, we were all quite excited! When students are given permission to use their smart phones in class for an educational purpose, it increases their participation in class!

    1. really?! which class was that? I bet it was fun!! I was quite amazed by it. Kahoot! was actually the activity I liked most (even though I didn't manage to load the page). I was actually concerned with the use of cell phone in class as students might be doing other things. But Kahoot! tackle the problem by showing who are in the game. THat's why it really took me aback.

  2. Hi, Cindy! I remember we tried this one in the class but I lost the tract at that time... To use it, any sign up is not required? And it only can be used for multiple choice or in other ways?

    1. Hi Yuna, sorry for the late reply~ I think learners don't have to sign up. But it necessitates teachers to sign up so as to create the questions~I believe it has the basic game mode with multiple choice and they might have other game modes~(I haven't gone that far though..)

  3. I like this as well! It brings a lot of fun to the classroom. Also, when I attended an online course, the moderator used it to have some interactions with the attendees around the world. That's so cool! The biggest problem is, according to my experience, it heavily relies on the quality of the Internet connection. Too many people use it in the same place at the same time may lead to glitch.

    1. this is awesome! I really like this idea of playing Kahoot! in virtual classrooms as it motivates students to join (some people just don't pay attention in online class ), and for teachers, it enables teachers to know who are listening and who are not~ and u think critically about it. Network can be a problem. =(

  4. Hi Cindy! I find it's quit user-friendly when student do not need to sigh up for an account to play with Kahoot, they just need to write down the PIN number on the webpage. I think this design saves a lot precious time in class.

    1. Yes! you certainly have a point there. it makes classroom with the use of technology so much easier. In addition, teachers can take control of the class as everyone needs to participate to keep the game going!
